Today's English usage is desert!  d-e-s-e-r-t. 

This word often causes problems even for native English speakers.  It is an noun or a verb. And both have slightly different pronunciations. 

①名词形式 

The noun form of this word means a dry sandy place.  It is usually very big: the Sahara Desert（撒哈拉沙漠） , the Gobi Desert（戈壁沙漠）.  For example： I heard the plane went down at the Sahara Desert.

②动词形式

The verb form means to leave, or run away from was no support.  It also indicate a lack of responsibility (没责任心). For example: The soldier deserted from the army. (士兵逃离军队)

Noun名词：['desert]

Verb动词 : [de'sert ]

Using this word as a verb in casual conversation, implies that the person is not a very caring or a reliable person, and is therefore used as a negative term.
